| Teen Drinking: |
| Q: |
I've heard that I can't drink alcohol inside of a house in Pleasanton. Is
that true? |
| A: |
If you are under 21, you cannot drink, be under the influence of or
possess alcohol inside of a house. The law, which is actually a city ordinance,
was written because of all of the tragedies associated with teens and drinking,
especially during and after parties. Those who violate the law can be made to
pay a fine and/or attend counseling. The person throwing the party can be fined
$250, or even arrested. Additionally, parents or guardians whose residence is
used for a party may also be liable and cited.
There are also state laws that make it illegal to have alcohol inside of a
vehicle, on school grounds or to buy it for/furnish it to a minor. In addition,
you could lose your driver's license if you are found to be driving with any
amount of alcohol in your blood. (Reference: California Business and Professions
Code, California Vehicle Code, Pleasanton Municipal Code)
The bottom line is, the legal drinking age is 21 for a reason. It is to keep
you, your friends and others safe from the dangers of drinking.

| Curfew: |
| Q: |
Is
there a curfew in Pleasanton?
|
| A: |
Yes.
It is 10:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. seven days a week.
There are exceptions, such as for work, an emergency, during a
school or religious event or if you’re with a parent.
But if you’re just hanging out or roaming the streets, the police
may very well stop you and call your parents to see if you’re supposed
to be home. Many times, teens
who are out late become the victims of crimes or accidents.
The curfew law (also a city ordinance) is designed to keep this
from happening.

| Truancy: |
| Q: |
What happens if I cut school? |
| A: |
If a police officer finds you cutting school, they will most
likely pick you up and return you to school. While it is not considered an
arrest, excessive truancy could cause you and a parent/guardian to appear
in court before a judge. Be smart, stay in school! |
| Driving: |
| Q: |
What is a provisional driver's license? |
| A: |
Driving is considered a privilege in California. There are
many restrictions placed on keeping your license. For people age 16 to 18,
there are restrictions for times you can drive and whether you can have
passengers. Section 12814.6 of the California Vehicle Code essentially
states that:
For the first six months you have your license, you cannot drive
between the hours of midnight and 5:00 A.M. and you cannot
transport passengers who are under 20 years of age unless you
are accompanied by a licensed driver over 25 years old.
During the second six months you have your license, you may
transport passengers under 20 years of age between 5:00 A.M. and
midnight without supervision. However, curfew laws still apply.
There are some exceptions, such as transporting an immediate family
member for medical necessity or lack of other transportation needs, or as
required by your job. However, you must have a signed statement from your
parent or employer, as applicable.
This is a rather complex law, and there are many other driving laws
that you need to stay familiar with. You are encouraged to consult the
California Vehicle Code or your D.M.V. Driver Handbook for more details. |
